“That’ll teach the little shits.”

The girls would keep their traps shut now. I tossed the phone book down with a satisfied smile.

All satisfaction disappeared when my phone rang. It could only be one person.

That wasn’t good. There was no reason for her to be calling. Not now. Not unless she was trying to worm her way into my retirement plans again. Fat chance of that ever happening. Once this was over, I planned to leave her and her bullshit behind.

In a body bag, preferably.

I yanked my phone out.

The bitch didn’t even give me a chance to speak before blurting, “Everything’s falling apart.”

So dramatic.

“What happened?” I faked a yawn to show her how little I cared. “Bartender cut you off already?”

“No, you idiot. This is bad. Awfully bad.”

Granted, she seemed sincere in her hysteria this time. Was I ready to jump on the crazy train with her, though? Not hardly.

“What’s bad?”

“I had everything all planned so perfectly. The sheriff’s funeral is supposed to be this evening, which is why I scheduled for us to leave the island tonight.”

Why was she telling me this again?

“Yes, I know. It’s the way we planned it, remember?”

“Well, guess what? Instead of all the locals drowning in their sorrows and not paying attention to what’s going on in their community, they’ve got cops from other areas conducting DUI checks at the bridge. Even the highway patrol is out there with a damn dog. A couple of people were complaining about it, so I drove by to see for myself. They’re checking every car.”

Hm…that wasn’t good, but it wasn’t the end of the world either. We’d planned the third snatch on a day the local cops wouldn’t be patrolling the roads. They’d never notice me driving three little girls to the second staging area. We’d be off the island in plenty of time for the drop-off.

“We’ll just wait ’til the checkpoint is over. Those only last a couple of hours. Just keep drinking until you pass out and trick some local asshole into making the worst decision of his year. What’s the big deal?”

“What’s the big deal?” Her voice went up several octaves. “Are you stupid?”

I ground my teeth together. This was why I hated talking to the bitch over the phone. She wouldn’t dare say shit like that to my face, knowing I would slap the nasty right out of her mouth. Over the phone, I couldn’t touch her.

“Don’t call me stupid. Especially not when you’re freaking out over a nonissue like a couple hours of delay when we don’t even have anyone waiting for us yet. The exchange isn’t even until the day after tomorrow, right? Because you decided to snag the kid early, we have to sit on more kids for longer because no one is ready to pick them up yet!”

My plan had been to wait until the day after tomorrow and just snatch the kid before driving straight over the bridge. Easy breezy. But no, the bitch had insisted we get the
